Tested, Certified, Reviewed, Researched, and Patented

We are parents, too, and our babies slept on numu air® because it’s the safest crib mattress solution on the market. But you don’t have to take our word for it: multiple independent laboratories have tested the sleep surface and confirmed that it does improve baby sleep safety significantly.

Tested in 2023 by one of the best labs in the USA

When choosing the safest mattress for your baby, focus on four essential qualities; the optimal combination of these attributes will ensure you chose the right mattress:
  1.  Firmness

  2.  Airflow (the indrawing of fresh oxygenated air)

  3.  CO₂ dispersion (unimpeded expiration and clearance of CO₂)

  4.  Heat dispersion

In 2023, we ran the most extensive testing in an independent laboratory in the USA, specializing in infant product safety. The tests were conducted by Michael Leshner, PE, DFE. We tested our baby sleep surface and compared it to the most popular mattresses marketed as “breathable.”

“In infants, carbon dioxide (CO₂) rebreathing can be a serious concern, as their small size and delicate respiratory system make them more susceptible to the effects of elevated CO₂ levels. Infants who sleep in an environment with poor ventilation, or who are placed face down on soft surfaces, such as a bed or couch, may be at risk of rebreathing exhaled CO₂. This can lead to a condition known as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), which is a leading cause of death in infants under the age of one. To reduce the risk of CO₂ rebreathing and SIDS, it is recommended that infants sleep on their back on a firm, flat surface, and that their sleeping environment be well-ventilated.”
Michael Leshner, PE, DFE. Chair of the ASTM Ad Hoc Juvenile Product Firmness and Breathability Task Group and expert in infant sleep products.

𝟏. Firmness Test Passed

The numu air® sleeping surface proudly passed the rigorous firmness test for crib mattresses conducted by a U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission accredited lab and by the independent “Baby Breathing Lab”, affirming its compliance with the highest safety standards.

The certification not only highlights our commitment to safety but also reassures parents that our product offers a secure and supportive sleep environment for their little ones, aligning with CPSIA rules: ASTM F2933-21 and 16 CFR 1241 safety standards for crib mattresses.

𝟐. 23 Times Better Airflow

Lower airflow resistance of an infant mattress means more air can be inhaled through the mattress. That’s why we need our newborn mattress to be really breathable.

However, the word “breathable” is heavily misused in the baby mattress industry. The materials referred to as “breathable” can vary dramatically in terms of the actual, scientifically measured air resistance. In an independent lab, Michael Leshner, PE, DFE. (Chair of the ASTM Ad Hoc Juvenile Product Firmness and Breathability Task Group and expert in infant sleep products)  tested 9 mattresses, including numu air®, to see which one had the lowest air resistance for a load of 10 newtons (2.54 pounds, which is about the weight of a baby’s head facing down) and at an airflow rate of 2 liters per minute (LPM).

The results are shown below. numu air® remarkably outperforms other mattresses: its air resistance is 0.04, it was ranked the best out of all mattresses tested and its score is 23x lower than the average for the 8 other tested products.

We can conclude with confidence: numu air® is the most truly breathable mattress there is.

𝟑. 2.4 Times Better CO₂ Dispersion

Exhaled air, rich in CO₂ and low in oxygen, can gather around a newborn crib mattress and a baby’s airways during sleep, posing a risk of hypercarbia (excessive CO₂ in the blood) and hypoxemia (insufficient oxygen in the blood). These conditions are serious and potentially fatal, with CO₂ rebreathing considered a key risk factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It’s crucial for the area around the baby’s face to have as much CO₂ dispersed as possible, reducing rebreathing to keep CO₂ levels low.

In an independent lab test by Michael Leshner, PE, DFE. comparing 9 baby mattresses, including numu air® the findings were clear: numu air® allowed only 5.57% of CO₂ to be rebreathed, it is ranked the best out of all mattresses tested and its score is by 2.4x better than the average of the 8 other products tested (13.54%).

This highlights numu air®’s superior ability to maintain a safer breathing environment for babies, minimizing the risk associated with CO₂ rebreathing.

𝟒. Materially Reduces Overheating

Overheating is another major issue in baby sleep safety. The sleeping environment, including the baby’s clothes, covers, and the material that the breathable crib mattress is made of, can prevent heat from dispersing naturally. It can make the baby’s temperature increase, which creates a hazard.

To find out how temperature is retained on numu air® and on a standard vinyl-covered mattress,  in an independent lab, Michael Leshner, PE, DFE. had a water-filled dummy connected to a heater tested under lab conditions.

It was clearly shown that, on numu air®, the temperature of the water dummy representing a sleeping baby was 98.37 °F (36.87 °C), and on a vinyl mattress, it was 103.3 °F (39.56 °C). This difference of 5°F degrees can be very dangerous for a baby’s body. When covered with a duvet (which is not recommended), the dummy temperature was 107.17 °F (41.76 °C) on numu air® and 117.07 °F (47.26 °C), which makes a stunning difference of almost 6°F.

“Certain crib mattresses have been designed with air-permeable materials to reduce rebreathing of expired gases, in the event that an infant ends up in the prone position during sleep, and these may be preferable to those with airimpermeable materials."

“The leading hypothesis that explains significant risk factors for SIDS in the sleeping environment is the rebreathing hypothesis…. we re-introduced here an infant sleeping surface which is made of permeable netting (referring to numu air) thus allowing free air movement through it. The special characteristics of aeration, ventilation, and resistive properties, aimed to decrease the likelihood of significant CO₂ rebreathing, may decrease important risk factors for SIDS.”

Researched in two hospitals

numu air® has been studied in medical research facilities, with studies focusing on its innovative airflow design and ability to create a safer sleeping environment. These studies confirm numu air®’s effectiveness in allowing free airflow, significantly reducing CO₂ accumulation, and preventing dust mite survival on the sleeping surface. Such evidence highlights numu air® as a leader in promoting healthful sleep for infants, outperforming standard and marketed “breathable” mattresses in crucial safety aspects.

Another physiological study compared the airflow through numu® against four infant mattresses marketed to prevent prone rebreathing, as well as one standard infant mattress. Conducted by Dr. Mark Gaides and Dr. Ephraim Bar-Yishay in the Pulmonary Laboratory at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel, the study revealed that numu air® facilitated free airflow, showcasing a rapid CO₂ elimination rate that prevents its accumulation. Impressively, these characteristics were significantly superior to those observed in all other tested mattresses.

A physiological study aimed at assessing airflow through the mattress surface was conducted by Dr. Ephraim Bar-Yishay in the Pulmonary Laboratory at Hadassah Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel. The findings highlighted that the meshed netting design allowed for free airflow with minimal resistance, significantly reducing the accumulation of carbon dioxide (CO₂).In a parasitological study led by Dr. Kosta Mumcuoglu in the Parasitology Laboratory at Hadassah Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel, the focus was on evaluating the mattress surface’s ability to prevent house dust mite survival. The results unequivocally demonstrated that the new netting material completely inhibited dust mite survival, a stark contrast to conventional mattresses that not only allow dust mites to survive but also to reproduce.
